March 1, 2011 - Day 6 in Bogota, COLOMBIA

Day 6 in Bogota, COLOMBIA. Luzelena had things she had to deal with, so she left me with a friend who works at her mom's center - Maxiel.  She and i spent the day prowling around Bogota starting with the Jose Cestino Mutis Botonical Gardens. It is a lovely place that is huge and has a good representation of not only native species but also of plants near and far.  Once again i got lots more video footage than i did still shots.

The sign at the entrance with general layout.

This is a wax palm, which is the national tree.

The bridge over the pond.

Another vantage point.

A common birdie that i had never seen before.

Signs about the plants in Spanish!

A pretty artificial waterfall.

We are now walking around Bogota.

I liked this building. Strange window layout.

We are now in the Emerald Museum. They don't let you take pictures of the museum exhibits but they do let you take pictures of the city through the windows. All of the following are out of the museum.

Maxiel, my gracious guide for the day. My Spanish was rusty and she spoke no English so we had amusing moments as you can guess!

The sign!

They give you props to pose in front of the sign!

Next we went to Quinta de Bolivar. This museum was the actual residence of Simon Bolivar, the liberator of Colombia from Spanish rule. Read more about it:
You can take a virtual visit on this site as well

Looking toward the hills near the entrance.

Looking across the plaza.

Graffiti across the street.

A bust of Bolivar himself.

Looking across the fountain to the entrance.

Through the entrance and looking at the museum. I took some video inside but because the lighting was bad i didn't get any other still photos.

After we left the museum we were struck by a deluge. I had NEVER seen it rain so hard for so long in my life. Here we are sitting by the adjacent University of the Andes hoping for a break.

The break never came so we moved on despite the streets literally becoming rivers.

The water was overwhelming everything!

This was a cool mural near the street above. None of this too far from the museum above.
