March 4, 2011 - Day 9 in Bogota, COLOMBIA

Day 9 in Bogota, COLOMBIA
Luzelena was incessant as a host! Every day was packed with fun filled adventures. This day meant a trip to Villa de Leyva, which is a historic Spanish colonial town that has been preserved to remain that way. It is a national heritage city. The environment changed drastically from the green and lush Andes highlands of Bogota to the more deserty mountains of the Leyva region. It reminded me of parts of Wyoming and Utah at times. On the way we stopped at a few historical sights. One of the problems that i am faced with writing about this so much time after i actually did this trip is that i forgot some of the details! Luckily i take pictures of signs and things to remind me, but even if you only look at these for the beauty alone i deem them worthy!

This is the Boyaca bridge. This is significant in the independence movement of Bolivar. Many a battle was fought here with the last culminating in the actual independence of the area that then consisted of Colombia, Venezuela, Panama and Ecuador.

We were driving Luzelena's mother's car which had this bumper sticker. It translates into "Don't rob the government, they don't like the competition".

Yes, they have dandelions in Colombia!

After hours of bumpy and crappy roads we made it to Villa de Leyva. I realized that even though things don't look too far on a map, they can take a long time due to the horrendous conditions of the roads there.

Apparantly Luzelena and her mother take people up to the hill above. Luzelena was thrilled to spend time in the town itself instead of arriving and then climbing!

Lots of cute things lurk in these parts!

This is the Museum of Paleontology just on the outskirts of town. The area is renowned for its exquisite fossil finds. There are many excellent specimens of prehistoric life excavated from these parts. Being a fan of all life including the former forms of it, i LOVED it!

"National University of Colombia: Faculty of Sciences"

I was just as impressed with the landscaping around the museum.

A moment came when EVERYBODY got a call! That's why i took so many photos of landscaping around the museum :)

This is a church back in town.

We found a snack shop next to it.

I ate a Disney waffle with yumminess inside!

Typical little shop.

Luzelena's friends. Don't remember their names now!

Another fossil museum outside of town. It hosts the world's most complete specimen of Kronosaurus. It was a HUGE sea monster that was like 50 ft long or something.

The tail is missing. That would be another 10 ft or something.

This fountain with the Virgin Mary above is totally made of fossils!
