July 15, 2011 - Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park, CA

After two nights in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, we headed up north a bit more and then east to the smaller lesser known Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park. It is on the list of park closures and we decided if we wanted to see it, we would have to do it soon. This park was made famous by the movie "Return of the Jedi" being filmed in the primeval Cheatham grove. Most incredible it was!

Visitor's center and road to the campgrounds. It wasn't as pleasant as we would have liked. The campgrounds are located next to the road where logging trucks constantly zoom back and forth.

The Van Duzen river is amazingly clear and pristine looking. It is also COLD!

We crossed the river and took a trail up the hills. This area was extensively logged in the past and it looked like it. I was disappointed thinking that the park was all old-growth. Most was not, but what was old-growth was well worth the trip.

Back at camp. It was actually a little chilly for the height of summer.

Despite it being cold and the water freezing, Trinity decided to take a dip.

Trinity's feather of crow. It didn't last long as it fell apart.

A small grove separated from the rest of the park by a few miles. THIS is what i was wanting to see! We did not see any Ewoks, Princess Leia or Chewbacca, although we looked hard :)

This is my favorite tree! It looks like a gnomes face growing out of the side. I named him "Tree Beard" after the character in the "Lord Of The Rings" franchise.

Easier to see his face here.

And as we were close to being done, we came along this unusual maple tree. It is whimsical and i was so surprised that it could even survive here. It is a popular spot for weddings and the like.

A better perspective on its size. See Trinny below?
