July 26, 2011 - Glen Canyon Park, Mt Davidson and Ocean Beach in San Francisco, CA

My friend Jim and i like to hike so we go all over the place to soak up natural wonders. Today i was not as ambitious as usual so we stayed in San Francisco and checked out a couple sites that neither of us had been to in several years. We started out in Glen Park. It is a canyon in the middle of the hills in San Francisco. I hadn't been there in 20 years but drive past it all the time. It had been restored with native vegetation and looked much nicer than the last time i had hiked it.

Next stop was the nearby Mt Davidson. At 927 ft it is the highest point in San Francisco. It was windy and foggy and a typical San Francisco summer day. I loved the above scene: a woman, a dog and a wind  swept tree.

At the top of Mt Davidson is a huge 100 ft cross. Due to religious conflicts the city sold it to an Armenian congregation, so a private cross now sits atop a city park.

The cross used to be visible throughout the city but the trees have grown in the last 20 years making it only visible from a few select angles and remains hidden unless you go right up to it!

After that exciting stop we finished the journey with a trip to the beach.

Juvenille Western Gulls are brown for two years slowly becoming more white like their parents.

I have grown to appreciate the gulls since they are always around the boat i live on.

One of the many murals on the walls around the ocean beaches.
