July 14, 2011 - Humboldt Redwoods State Park, CA

On July 13th, 2011 we set out from Willits, CA (where my friends live) and headed up the beautiful Highway 101. Willits is the gateway to the northern redwood country and it is a most beautiful drive.
We made it to Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park in Northern California is one of my favorite places on Earth. It is pristine old growth redwood forests with great hiking trails and campgrounds. We stayed at the Abie Creek campground. It is very quiet and nearby some of the largest stands of redwood forests left. I went with my friend Crystal, her daughter Trinity and her then-boyfriend Dale.

We got in too late on the 13th to do any hiking so all these pics are on the 14th.

The steller jays are quite entertaining.

Horsetails are one of the oldest plant families on the planet, dating back to dinosaur eras

Some of the beauty of the old-growth redwood forests are the knolls. Sometimes they resemble things. This one reminded me of a squirrel or chipmunk strolling down the trunk.

Ferns are abundant in redwood forests. This is a sword fern.

This pic has been my on my cell phone screen since i took it.

Sorrell is also very common in this ecosystem. Looks a lot like clover but it isn't.

Several kinds of fern and sorrel all in one pic.
