November 20, 2011 - PHOENIX TRIP - California and Nevada

Day 1 of the Phoenix Trip.

Ayme talked me into going to Phoenix for Thanksgiving. Her family was having a reunion at her aunt's house. We decided to make a road trip out of it. It turned out to be a very interesting journey as we packed a lot in a short amount of time.

We were worried about getting over the Sierra Nevada range. Storms were coming. We wanted to take Highway 50 through Nevada but since the roads are closed during stormed we took Highway 80 and then crossed over. The mountains are beautiful in the winter and i rarely make it there then.

The Nevada sign just west of Reno.

Once through Reno we hit Highway 50. Known as the loneliest highway in America, it is surely one of the most scenic. I did this road in the 90s and always wanted to go back. The winter setting added an extra touch of beauty to the whole thing.

The mountain ranges run north to south, so in effect the entire stretch through Nevada is climbing summits and descending into valleys.

There are few towns on this stretch. After Reno there is Fallon, which is not very exciting or scenic. We made it to Austin, NV, which WAS interesting and scenic. A former mining town, it now capitalizes on the tourism through these parts. We stopped at the only cafe open in town and talked to a very nice waitress who told us about some of this area.

The small Austin downtown. We continued on and stayed in Eureka, NV for the night.
