November 28, 2011 - PHOENIX TRIP - Arizona

Day 8 in Phoenix was spent by the pool and at Jojo's house. No pics were taken and it was nice and relaxing.

Day 9 on the Phoenix trip, we departed back to California.

The Eagletail Mountains off I-10 west of Phoenix.

We read about Quartzite, AZ and decided there were some quirky things to see.
This town is known for its gem shows and flea markets. In the winter it is home to thousands of RVs and trailers.

Also the site of the Hi Jolly Memorial. He was commissioned by the government to use camels for transport and communication. The project failed and the camels were "set free" to fend for themselves.

This is at Gemworld. This camel is made completely out of auto parts!

I had another chance to pet a camel!

The Quartzite Chamber of Commerce.

We also found this RV campground with the wildest metallurgy art.

Then we stopped at a shop that not only had lots of cool junk but had interesting adornments as well.

Including a little train track.

Now we are back in California looking at the Chocolate Mountains. We dipped down from Blythe, CA so we could see the Salton Sea.

Between the Chocolate Mountains and the Salton Sea are the Algodones Dunes. The really remind you of the Sahara. This area is divided into the North Algodones Wilderness Area north of the highway and the Imperial Dunes Recreational Area to the south.

At the top is a little rest area and a plaque.

The dunes are only a small strip about 5 miles wide, but they are about 70 miles north to south and extend into Mexico.

I've always wanted to see the Salton Sea and on this day i did. It is a very surreal places. One of my favorite manmade disasters! It was popular during the fifties and now has lots of ghost towns, but a few hardy souls still live here.

We were surprised to see that the whole shore is littered with dead fish. Evidence that the lake is drying out and becoming too salty for certain species.

This lizard is in Palm Desert, where we lodged at an EXCELLENT Mexican restaurant called Don Diego's.
