November 23, 2011 - PHOENIX TRIP - Utah and Arizona

Day 4 of the Phoenix Trip.

After a wonderful two nights and one full day at Bryce, we headed to the Grand Canyon with a few stops on the way!

First stop was in Kanab, UT. Kanab is the Navajo word for "willow" (our waitress was informative!) Also many a western was filmed around here. It is also near Zion N.P. which i want to go to again as well.

Missed the Arizona sign so i had to take a photo of my atlas :)

We went over to Page, AZ to see the famous Antelope Slot Canyon. I didn't know it by name but i saw a post card of it and we decided it was cool enough for a side trip. It is entirely on the Navajo Nation, so all proceeds support tribal affairs. Quite a process. They truck you in, you walk through and then back and then they truck you back. Not the only slot canyon around, but the most popular and maybe the most photographed. Once you see it you will surely recognize it.

Once again, thanks to Ayme's better camera i can show photos that she took inside.

In the middle it really was almost pitch black.

Now we are out the back entrance ready to go back through.

Back to the car! Very cool, indeed.

Still on the Navajo reservation, the small town of Cameron has a huge arts and crafts store. Everything Navajo you can think of. The prices were a bit high though. There was even a Navajo woman weaving one of those incredible rugs on site.

Now nearing the Grand Canyon National Park, we stopped at a roadside kiosk thing. Prices better but we couldn't muster up the cash to be a little rug. They don't take credit cards :(

Aaaahh! The Grand Canyon. I love it and hate it. I love everything that it is. I hate what it has become. Grand Canyon Village has about 10,000 permanent residences now and there are a million tourist at any given moment. I know you can get away from all that but the two times i've been here have only been on the South Rim. Next time, the north!

In the lookout tower, is beautiful native art.

This one was totally new to me.

We got to the park too late for a hike. We only stayed one night so we didn't do much. We did traipse through this museum where there are gorgeous paintings of the area for sale.

A relief map at the IMAX theater next to our hotel. We stayed in a town called Tusuyan just at the south entrance.
