November 21, 2011 - PHOENIX TRIP - Nevada and Utah

Day 2 of the Phoenix Trip.

We woke up early to get a good start in Eureka, NV.

They have a silly passport thing where you are supposed to get a stamp in every town in Nevada on the highway.

Old time buildings are still in use today.

Eureka is a little bigger than Austin. Here they even have an opera house!

Main drive in Eureka.

We hit a stretch where everything was covered in freshly fallen snow. Great photo ops!

Ayme's little Miata packed for adventure. It was nice to be a passenger for a change. I saw much more on this route this time than i did the last.

We then made it to Ely, NV, which is much bigger than the other towns outside of Reno.

We were impressed by all the murals, glass windows and other artistic touches.

Downtown Ely (pronounced EE-lee), NV

We read about the living railroad museum and just had to check it out.

We stumbled upon the Ward Charcoal-Ovens State Park. This is where, you guessed it, they made charcoal! They look like beehives though. The area is gorgeous. Deserts surrounded by forests and majestic mountains.

Inside the ovens, they all have different shaped holes and windows.

We drove past this ranch with antler fences. It was so amazing we had to stop.

We then stopped at Great Basin National Park. I drove through here once in the 90s and drove up to the top. This time we only had time to see the Lehman Caves, which i missed last time. It was well worth the  stop.

Since this park is less known and off-season we got a private tour of the caves by one of the rangers!

Looking down the side of the mountains to the little town of Baker.

Luckily Ayme's camera is better in dark places. All the photos inside the cave are from her camera.
